MORESBY South MP Justin Tkatchenko has presented 10 dinghies and outboard motors to families from the coastal communities of his electorate.
The recipients of K300,000 motors and dinghies are from Pari (four families), Wanigela (four) and Fisherman Island (two).
Tkatchenko, also the Housing and Urban Development Minister, said the boats and dinghies were supplied through the district services improvement programme (DSIP) funds to ensure coastal villagers in Moresby South were empowered economically.
He added that the outboard motors and dinghies encouraged villagers to make a living out of the assets for themselves and their families.
Sport Fishing Papua New Guinea delivered the boats and engines.
“Last year, we gave out 10 outboard motors and dinghies, and this year, we found a different supplier that has a new model of boats that are manufactured here in PNG,” Tkatchenko said.
“Safety-wise, efficiency-wise, it’s a fantastic product that we are now trialing with our people. And, so far, the results are very good.
“The reason why I was attracted to these boats, is that they are more efficient.
“They have a flat deck you can easily work on and walk on.
“These families will be using these boats for economic empowerment, meaning they will go out fishing and selling their product at the fish market.
“I don’t want my people sitting around doing nothing.
“I want my people to work and earn a living and be proud of the money they make to support their families.”
Ten more boats are to be released in June, to the coastal villagers.
