ATHREE-year-old girl is in dire need of brain surgery before her health deteriorates in two weeks.
Hailing from Western Highlands and Central provinces, health officials have sighted Doris Paul developing what is most likely craniophyaryngioma, a benign tumor that develops near the pituitary gland, which is a small endocrine gland at the base of the brain.
Doris father Paul Wai was lost when he was told of the news recently.
He said he had taken his daughter to one of the city hospital in Port Moresby before they were referred to the main, Port Moresby General Hospital.
It was there that the surgery division saw Doris earlier this month at the children’s ward.
It was revealed that Doris had developed gradual onset of lower limb weakness for several months associated with visual failure.
She is unable to stand and walk.
“Management of this lesion is ideally by surgery. The gross total removal is not possible in Port Moresby General Hospital due to limited surgical instrument,” the division said.
The division has recommended surgery abroad as an option worth pursuing. This however is valued at K60, 000.
“We recommend where this is chosen that it is accomplished within a month”.
The hospital has also advised that Doris condition may deteriorate whilst arrangements is made for surgery and treatment abroad.
