Tongayu appointed as cooperatives’ acting registrar

 ALEX Tongayu, the registrar of companies in the Investment Promotion Authority, will also hold the position of acting registrar of cooperative societies.

This was announced by the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Industry Richard Maru on Tuesday.

Tongayu was appointed following a decision to shift the functions of the cooperative societies from the Department of Commerce and Industry to the authority’s company registry.

Maru said it was to avoid the duplication of functions which was creating more bureaucracy in the department and the authority’s company registry.

The appointment of Tongayu was done in accordance with the Cooperative Societies Act and in line with the government’s plan to elevate small and medium enterprises and the Stret Pasin Stoa scheme.

Tongayu’s appointment as acting registrar of cooperative societies was gazetted on April 16.

Maru also stressed that his decision would ensure uniformity in the registration of businesses.

He described this move as a one-stop shop.

Tongayu is confident he will carry out the functions of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies.

He said there would be a complete overhaul to the data system of the cooperative societies in terms of their registration.

“I will also ensure that proper procedures and processes will also be put in place in terms of registering cooperative societies and its operation in the country.”
