LAE Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie says a lot of people do not seem to know how to register a complaint against police.
Here he outlines a guide to help the pubic reach the police to ensure they take some sort of action for justice’s sake.
“There have been allegations made against certain members of the police in the social media,” he said.
“We have realised that many people do not know how or where to register a complaint.
“A post on social media is good but you must follow it up with factual evidence by way of registering your complaint in person, being interviewed by the Internal Investigation Unit (IIU) members and providing a signed statement.
“Only through this your complaint can be acted on.
You can register your complaint through the IIU at Lae Central police station duty counter where you will be referred,
“If the matter is not attended to or you are not satisfied, you may refer it to the Ombudsman Commission who has a signed agreement with police. This is the police oversight.
“Policing is quite a difficult task as we deal with all sorts of people with different characters every day. Meaning, complaints against police are unavoidable.
“This is the same in every police service throughout the world.
“As service members, our conduct on and off duty are scrutinised.
“I am glad to say that the number of public complaints against police in the Lae metro command has been on the decline and we will ensure that we keep it that way.
“Our members have generally improved in the way they go about carrying out their duties.
“We are community-orientated and will ensure that we have close ties with our community to provide you the policing service you deserve.
“On the same token, I ask that members of the public cooperate with police.”
