Top cop says officer detained after allegedly causing death

A POLICEMAN has been detained after allegedly causing the death of a man during a drunkard brawl at the police barracks in Alotau, Milne Bay, acting Southern police commander Chief Supt John Maru says.
“The suspect had allegedly punched the victim, causing him to fall down,” Chief Supt Maru said.
“The victim was rushed to the Alotau General Hospital and passed away later.
“The suspect and the victim were among other friends drinking alcohol when fighting broke out last Friday, at about 6.30pm.
“The case is now under investigation.”
Chief Supt Maru said in another incident, five armed men held up Louisiade local level government president Semi Ernest at the Panaeati Island in the Samarai-Murua electorate last Saturday at about 1.30pm and stole his outboard engine. “Ernest was in his dinghy and fishing in the sea and the pirates armed with three factory-made pistols and two grass knives came in their dinghy and held him up,” Chief Supt Maru said.
“They stole his outboard motor engine, put it in their dinghy and went away. Ernest was later rescued by other villages while drifting and taken back to the village.”
Chief Supt Maru said the pirates, who were all masked when robbing Ernest.
