Top three guard spots
THE Townsville Blackhawks and Burleigh Bears recorded victories in their indigenous appreciation round 10 clashes to maintain their first and third spots in the Queensland Cup.
The Blackhawks proved a class above Central Queensland Capras, winning 34-18 at Jack Manski Oval, Townsville, on Saturday and moving to 17 points, one ahead of the Papua New Guinea Hunters, who had the bye.
Kumul Rhyse Martin scored a try for his side and continued his excellent form in the back-row for the Blackhawks.
The Bears scored a valuable 30-18 away win over defending premiers the Jets, keeping them in third place, while the Redcliffe Doplhins were beaten 20-16 by the Northern Pride in Cairns and fell back to fifth place with the Easts Tigers, who were the other side on the bye, moving up to fourth spot.
Bears halfback Jamal Fogarty kicked eight goals (four conversions and four penalties) and scored a try for a 20-point haul while PNG’s own Pandia brothers Richard and Sebastian started for the first time together for Ipswich — former Hunter Sebastian was finally given his run-on start in the No.12 jersey.
In the round’s other notable result, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls continue their climb up the Intrust Super Cup ladder with a 62-16 thrashing of the Mackay Cutters at BMD Kougari Oval in Wynnum, Brisbane yesterday. The 11-try romp saw Wynnum No.7 Matthew Seamark slot nine conversions from 11 attempts.
The Cutters had North Queensland’s Tautau Moga and John Asiata backing up but it made little difference as the Seagulls, who finished in the top four last year, moved up to 12th spot signalling what could be the turning point for the Jon Buchanan-coached side, who had a horrendous start to this season losing their first six matches.
Meanwhile the competition’s other Seagulls outfit, Tweed Heads, ground out a 22-16 win over the talented Sunshine Coast Falcons and kept within range of the leading pack on 10 points, two away from a coveted top-five spot.
Tweed winger Dave Sheridan scored a hat-trick to help his side to the crucial win while the Falcons, who have shown patches of brilliance throughout the opening 10 weeks of competition, need more consistency to push for a finals berth.
Souths Logan Magpies and Norths Devils met in an all Brisbane affair yesterday with Wayne Bennett’s former club rattling off seven tries to hammer the Devils into submission 42-20 at Bishop Park.
The Magpies forwards scored six tries with nippy halfback Sam Scarlett getting the other four-pointer.
Credit must be given to Norths though for fighting back in the second half after trailing 36-6 at the break.
