WOMEN’S snooker champion Hane Vaieke is a strong contender for the Bank South Pacific Papua New Guinea National Snooker Titles, says tournament coordinator Joey Chan.
Chan said the titles would begin with the women’s event from Sept 4-9 and the men’s title on the following week (Sept 11-16).
He confirmed that 40 female competitors had registered for the tournament and would be divided into eight groups of five according to player handicap and ranking.
“We have confirmation that last year’s winner Hane Vaieke will be defending her title,” Chan said.
“The woman she knocked out last year and former multiple-title winner Geua John is also returning to challenge for the title.
“Geua will want to win back the title that she held since 2006.
Also confirmed is former titleholder Agnes Mawi, and seasoned campaigners Madeline Kaina and Waisina Laho.
Chan said the six-day event would be held at the three venues — Aviat Club, Laguna Hotel and Lamana.
“The following week will see the start of the second stage, with 40 of the best men’s snooker players fighting in out over six nights,” Chan said.
“Defending champion Marcus Ng has confirmed his participation and he is expecting stiff competition from the likes of Ralph Kaina, Roger Ng and Willie Vaieke from Port Moresby.
“Unconfirmed as yet but still expected to attend is former men’s champion Djorne Fong from Kavieng,” Chan said.
Chan said the knockouts would start on Sept 15, with the final to be played the following day.
