Tougher laws must be passed to protect our environment

Letters, Normal

I wonder whether my children and grandchildren will live to see and benefit from the resources that I am seeing now.
As stated in the preamble of the constitution, goal No 4 of our national goals and directive principles: “Papua New Guinea`s natural resources and environment be conserved for collective benefit of us all and be replenished for benefit for future generation.”
Hence, there must be a wise use of our natural resources.
The changes done to our environment as a result of mining and petroleum activities and their waste disposal are not in accordance with the aims of the constitution and Water Resources Act 1982, which are to be used for drinking, washing and fishing.
A good example is the Fly River and Angabanga River which have been damaged as a result of the tailings from the OK Tedi mine.
Thus, there is a need for some strict laws to protect our environment from being further damaged.
