TEN cartons of expired goods were confiscated from a Chinese shop in Maprik by the town mayor Paul Dingu and his officers yesterday.
Dingu personally directed the shop employees of Yang Xing to remove the expired goods from the shelves and put them outside.
He condemned the shop for selling expired goods, including sweets, tinned food and sauces.
“This operation will go on for a week to ensure that all the expired items are removed from the shops within the town,” he said.
“Some of these shops tend to ignore procedures and allow expired goods to be on their shelves for the locals to buy and consume.”
Dingu said he was not happy with the actions of some shop owners for keeping expired goods on the shelves compelling him to start the operation to clean up shops in Maprik.
He stressed that not all shops were guilty of selling expired items and commended those businesses that were cooperating and following the law.
“There are more than 20 shops owned by the foreigners in Maprik doing business,” he said.
“All the shops will be will be checked by the town authority.”
