PAPUA New Guinea sprint queen, Toea Wisil has been signed by Bank South Pacific as their new brand ambassador.
Wilsil is the nation’s most celebrated female athlete, showing a dedication and commitment to athletics that has led her to be one of the most recognisable athletes in the Pacific region.
Her most notable accomplishments on the track are five gold medals won at the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia, where the fleet-footed track queen outshone her opponents in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay.
Wisil has continually strived to achieve a high level of competition, which has led her to now being the national record holder in the 200m and 400m.
It was those achievements that led to her being crowned PNG’s Sports Woman of the Year in the SP Sports Awards in 2010 and 2011.
Wisil had the honour of being the country’s flag bearer at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where she performed extremely well in the 100m.
Welcoming her as the brand ambassador, chief executive officer, Ian Clyne said the bank was delighted to support Wisil, who had done PNG proud over the years and who was highly regarded by many as an exceptional role model.
“Toea Wisil is a great ambassador for athletics, and we are delighted that she has joined the BSP team,” he said.
“She will provide invaluable assistance in promoting athletics, and encouraging children to live healthy, active lifestyles so that we may see an increase in participation by children,” he said.
“Our focus is on the children and youth of our country, and the Pacific.
“They are our future and we must give them hope, health and opportunity and we are proud to be supporting Wisil in her quest for continued success.”
The arrangement will see the 25-year-old associate with the bank team and use her experience and success to promote and encourage healthy, active lifestyles through sports, environment and community initiatives supported by the bank.
“This sponsorship by BSP will go a long way in my development as an athlete, and I am very grateful to BSP for showing confidence in me and allowing me to be associated with BSP and its brand,” Wisil said.
“This new relationship will give me the best opportunity to train hard and give myself the edge I need to continue to fly the PNG flag around the world, and is timely as I begin my preparations for international events, including the all-important 2015 Pacific Games, which PNG will play host to.”
BSP is a major supporter of sports in PNG, including swimming, tennis, cricket and Paralympics, among others. The BSP community presence is not simply an opportunity to build good customer relations, but to contribute meaningfully to the development of PNG.
