THE Buimo Correctional Institution’s agriculture and livestock unit has a new tractor – thanks to AusAid.
The tractor will help improve food production and generate an income in prison.
The prison lacked the e tools to produce the fresh food it needs to supplement prison diets as well to earn money.
Acting commander Chief Insp Leo Niafiku said the jail has been using two old engines from the 1960s when the jail was established.
“Most times, prisoners were engaged to plow the land using spades and forks for planting and many were hurt doing that,”he said.
Niafiku commended the leadership of former commissioner, the late Martin Balthasar and his deputy, the late David Melenge for working closely with Supt Judy Tala to collaborate with AUSAID to provide an essential need to Buimo jail.
“The equipment will perform multitasking, including plowing, drainage, grass cutting and loading that will allow more time for prisoners and officers to plan and execute other prison industry activities,” Niafiku said.
“Buimo is privileged and will take care and use the tractor properly as it is our friend purposely to increase our fresh food production, supplement our diet and generate income for the institution” Niafiku said.
Tara is away on compassionate leave after the death of her mother.
Niafiku commended the sacrifice and effort by jail’s rehabilitation unit, grounds manager major in-charge Robert Maimjuwi, Cpl Peter Goie and the inmates responsible for agriculture and livestock.
Chaplain Simon Nathan said that the tractor was a blessing from God.
