PEOPLE with vocational or technical skills are needed to take this country forward, Education Minister Jimmy Uguro says.
Uguro told The National that PNG needed people with innovation and technological and practical skills to drive the country forward.
He said the country needed students who studied fields that required innovation and developing new ideas and improving on current practices and methods.
He said more people needed to have the mindset of being practical, developing and enhancing products and means in order to be successful.
“Those who have gone through such experiences should be more productive in the communities by making use of the skills learned,” he said.
Uguro said the Marape Government was committed to educating its population through vocational education.
“Some of this intervention was establishing more vocational technical schools throughout provinces and districts,” he said.
“Our teachers must also be equipped with such vocational skills to effectively transform our next generation.
“I also call on government to release funds to support education programmes,” he said.
Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra mirrored the sentiment.
He said the country had a great need for more skilled people.
Dr Kombra urged students to get educated in vocational and technical schools so many skilled people would be employed in the country.
He said most students preferred universities and colleges.
Dr Kombra said more vocational centres and technical colleges were being upgraded and improved as learning institutions through support from donors.
