Traffic accidents increasing

The increasing number of cars in Port Moresby and the general increase in vehicles across the country are putting police officers under stress.
Boroko traffic division officer-in-charge Insp Joseph Salle told The National that the increasing number of road users would result in more traffic accidents and incidents.
He said police were not adequately equipped to deal effectively with all accidents.
“One of the major problems with the traffic police is that we do not have tow trucks. We have only one and it is now operating in Moresby while the other centres do not have any,” Salle said.
He said the increase in traffic accidents would expose the police’s lack of resources.
Salle said vehicles involved in accidents were vandalised or burned by the public if left unattended which caused more problems for vehicle owners and city authorities.
He said traffic police around the country needed to have tow trucks and other equipment to deal with the issues from increasing number of cars on the roads.
