POLICE want the Road Transport Authority and the National Capital District Commission to help them deal with minor traffic offences in the city.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou told The National that some motorists continued to breach minor traffic rules such as parking near junctions and roundabouts and ignoring traffic lights.
“Traffic offences like these are not big crimes so they are supposed to be regulated by the city authorities,” he said.
N’Dranou said one of their priorities this year was to start addressing minor traffic issues in the city.
“People do not understand that that it is not only the responsibility of the police,” he said.
He said police might either go against National Capital District Commission regulations or infringe Transport Authority laws which covered the transport system in the city.
N’Dranou stressed that police were in control only of the summary traffic Act.
“If they give me those authorities, I have plans to deal with those minor incidents,” he said.
“They are simple (to deal with). Instead of going through the long process of charging and arresting the traffic offenders, they could just pay a fine into an account and leave. This would require the cooperation of other organisations as well.”
