‘Traffic police should be armed with infringement notices’

TRAFFIC police officers should be given Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN) to issue to offenders while they are doing random checks and roadblocks, the head of Boroko Traffic Police says.
Officer in-charge Senior Insp Joseph Salle said police could collect a lot of money if they issued TIN to minor traffic offenders every day.
He said traffic offences were committed every day.
Even though they had limited space, they brought in defective vehicles and impounded them at the station before dealing with drivers and owners.
“We need big space to do that,” Salle said.
“We do no not have the constitutional powers to impound vehicles in our yard unless there is an order from the court.”
Salle said currently they had only one tow truck which had been very helpful in removing vehicles that were involved in accidents and could not be driven.
He said his division really needed one more tow truck that would help them tow big vehicles.
They also needed space for arresting and charging the drivers, crew, and the owners.
He added that Traffic Infringement Notices is issued by the Road Traffic Authority.
