A WEDDING reception in Kokopo, East New Britain ended tragically for a man whose body was later found in a drain near where the function was held.

Provincial police commander Supt Anthony Wagambie Jnr said the man would have died between the late hours of Saturday and early Sunday.

He said the wedding reception was held at the Kokopo Beach Bungalows on Saturday.

During the wedding reception, a fight broke out between some people at the party.

One of those involved in the fight was chased out of the hotel area, he said.

His body was discovered in the drain near the hotel on Sunday morning.

Police are yet to establish whether the man accidentally fell in the drain or was attacked.

Wagambie said officers were still investigating.

His identity is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, he said investigation into the mv Rabaul Queen sinking was still continuing in ENB.

He said police officers were now in Kavieng, New Ireland getting statements from witnesses.

The officers would travel back to ENB to see witnesses who still wanted to give their statements.

In another incident, a man from East Sepik was shot and wounded in both legs last week at Masarau in the Wide Bay area in Pomio.

Police believe that the victim was shot following a dispute with a local councillor.

A police rural patrol unit will be dispatched to the area to investigate.
