THREE partygoers were killed instantly and dozens are fighting for their lives in Port Moresby after a horrific accident at the 5-Mile water fountain roundabout on Saturday night.
The rear passenger cage of a 10-tonne truck slipped off when the belt holding it came loose.
A witness at the accident site, Buru Tara, said at around 10.15pm the truck came from East Boroko with people packed in the back.
“It wanted to make a turn when the passenger cage suddenly broke away from the vehicle’s back, throwing more than 25 passengers inside it off,” he said.
“It landed with impact on the brick and poles near the fountain.”
Three people were killed on the spot, while others suffered injuries and were transported to the Port Moresby General hospital by a St John Ambulance team.
Bystanders confirmed later that the truck came from Horse Camp settlement, at Sabama, and was doing its second drop-off to a nightclub in Gordon for a fundraising dance when the accident happened.
Most of the passengers were from Kerema and Kikori in Gulf province.
