A LOCAL trainee pilot is to undergo studies at the Aero Dynamic Flight Academy in Brisbane, Australia, to obtain a licence to fly commercial aircraft.
Allan Matlaun, a student at the Germaine Metropolitan Institute of Technology in Port Moresby, hopes to undertake the one-year study to obtain a commercial pilot’s licence with an instrument rating level.
Germaine principal director Jerry Magalu said since its inception in 2009, the institute had
sent three trainee pilots to Australia.
Two students will soon be completing their studies to obtain their licences with instrument ratings.
Other students who are undergoing theory studies at the institute are planning to raise funds to complete their studies at the Brisbane academy.
The academy, in collaboration with the institute, has been training students to fulfill their dreams of becoming pilots.
Magalu challenged the government to establish a flight training institution locally, saying finance was a setback despite the high demand among young Papua New Guineans wanting to become pilots.
The licence obtained from the Brisbane academy allows pilots to fly commercial airlines in PNG and overseas.
