SIX employees at the Porgera gold mine can now handle Jet A1 fuel following a recent training they received at the mine site, Barrick Niguini Ltd’s  business services superintendent Elias Keyiken says.

He said three of the participants were locals including Nyata Enenge from Kulapi village near the mine and located within the Special Mining Lease area.

Keyiken said BNL as a company had to ensure that its employees who dealt directly with aviation re-fuelling and storage had the appropriate training so that the operation was up to standard with best practices.

He noted Enenge’s achievement who had been able to “learn on the job”, and now qualified to perform the task he was engaged in for more than 25 years.

The four-day aviation competency education training was conducted by Aviation Solution Specialist Limited managing director Tom Peto.  The course was part of a global training programme adopted from the Shell Major Module.

It is a requirement by Civil Aviation Safety Authority for the training to be undertaken every two years.

The modules were centred on the major and obvious aspects of fuel handling and re-fuelling, highlighting also the importance of quality control.
