A GROUP of 26 disaster coordinators from 20 provinces have received training on disaster risk management and climate change to mitigate the impacts of natural hazards.
According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the training was funded by the United States Agency for International Development USAID.
National Disaster Centre director Colonel Carl Wrakonei thanked the United Nations (UN) and stakeholders for their support in strengthening disaster risk management efforts in the country.
UN resident coordinator Dirk Wagener emphasised the need for coordination among disaster risk management actors and climate change adaptation agencies.
IOM PNG chief of mission Lance Bonneau said their work “not only seeks to establish early warning systems and implement measures to mitigate risks to disasters induced by natural hazards, but also to promote participatory development aimed at building resilience”.
Bonneau said the training would equip participants with the knowledge and skills to replicate the training in the provinces.
The training would strengthen community resilience to disasters induced by natural hazards.
