TRANSPRENCY International PNG (TIPNG) has embraced a workshop for “Phones Against Corruption” hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a platform to help eradicate corruption.
The workshop was held in Port Moresby recently.
A pilot project and award-winning anti-corruption initiative by the Department of Finance and UNDP, Phones Against Corruption is expanding to include 44 government agencies.
TiPNG executive director Arianne Kassman said: “This initiative forms an avenue where TIPNG can step in to talk about corruption and encourage people to stop corruption initiative.
“The third stage of ‘Phone Against Corruption really tells us that the Department of Finance is committed to addressing this issue of corruption, reporting corruption is prevention of corruption.”
Phone Against Corruption encourages and allows the public to send free text messages to Digicel number 16321 to lay complaints, whether related to finance or non-financial issues, and be protected.
“The next stage of reporting this information we have to think about what’s going to happen, how this case is going to be addressed, is it going to be investigated, are the public aware of the investigation, are there any accountability and mechanism for this initiative?” Kassman said.
