A TAXI driver in Port Moresby has called on all relevant transport authorities and the national government to quickly address traffic woes in the capital city.
Joseph Ulg, from Mt Hagen, said traffic congestion was getting worse daily.
He said the congestion was causing inconvenience to commuters going to work and school.
“Last year, the city faced similar problems but this year it appears to have worsened,” he said.
“Pastem traffic save sot na stop lo uni. Nau m kam olgeta lo Wagani trafic lait. (Before it took a short while normally stopping at the University of Papua New Guinea roundabout now it extends all the way to the Waigani traffic light).”
Ulg said the traffic congestion meant an increase in the number of vehicles coming into the country and more people from the provinces flocking to Port Moresby.
Ulg said the issue was not a new one and that steps should have been taken to address it a long time ago.
“Can the relevant transport authorities and our government look into this before it gets way out of hand?” he asked.
He suggested feeder or access roads should be constructed to ease the flow of traffic.
Attempts to contact the secretary for Department of Transport were unsuccessful.
