Trawen returns by-election writ to GG

ELECTORAL Commissioner, Andrew Trawen returned the writ for the Kairiku-Hiri Open seat by-election to Governor-General, Sir Michael Ogio at Government House yesterday.

The occasion was witnessed by some government ministers, National Alliance Party leader and members, returning officers, the Central provincial administrator and others.

National Alliance Party candidate, Peter Namea Isoaimo won the seat and is the new MP.

He was declared the winner after collecting 20,792 votes to the required absolute majority in the elimination process.

People’s National Congress party candidate and sitting member, Paru Aihi came second with 17,699 votes. 

“The people of Kairuku-Hiri, especially the voters, supporters and the candidates, should be commended for ensuring a peaceful and trouble-free by election from campaigning to declaration,” Trawen said.

He thanked Central police, polling and counting officials and returning officer, Kila Egaba and his four assistants from Kairuku, Mekeo, Koiari and Hiri local level governments.

Trawen said the by-election cost  K4 million to engage 38 polling teams, 152 polling officials,  150 counting officials and 204 police personnel.

He said he was pleased to hear that candidates’ scrutineers really appreciated the electronic verification of ballot papers used in the counting.
