AUSTRALIAN Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison said 77 people received treatment on Manus Island as a result of a fight.
He said 40 of those were discharged, 22 suffered minor injuries and were receiving treatment.
“There were 13 serious injuries. There was one critical injury and there is one person who is deceased,” he said in a statement.
“The deceased person involved a head injury and that person passed away on transfer to the Lorengau Hospital. The injury was sustained outside the centre.”
Morrison said the critical injury involved a probable skull fracture and the person was being medically evacuated to Australia.
“The gunshot wound occurred also outside the centre itself and I note that there was reports of a gun, being fired at around 1am this morning (yesterday).
“There are no other reports that we are aware of, of any gunshot wounds or certainly any other reports of gunshots being fired or heard of that we are aware of at this time.”
He said it was a tragedy but it was a dangerous situation where people decide to protest violently and to take themselves outside the centre and place themselves at great risk.
