WEWAK hosted the triathlon time trails over the weekend to confirm the timings for the athletes who were selected during the national championships in Port Moresby to represent Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Championships in the Solomon Islands at the end of July.
“We want to make sure that the athletes are maintaining their times and are in form for the upcoming championships,” PNG Triathlon Association vice-president Gilbert Sarry said.
“Times recorded over the weekend were within expected ranges.”
He said the trials went well in spite of a few minor hiccups.
A total of 25 men’s and two women’s athletes participated in the event, which was divided into the sprint race for fit participants or those above the age of 18, and the shorter super sprint races for the children under 16-years.
In July, Wewak will also host a half marathon relay during Remembrance Day and the Sepik Ironman event, which is planned for the Independence weekend in September.
“Athletes in the province have done well in the sport, coming first second and third in the recent national championships in Port Moresby,” Sarry said.
“I hope to see the sport grow to other areas and have more women participation as well.”
