FOUR major tribes the township of Mendi in Southern Highlands have agreed to support PNG Power officers to carry out a major disconnection exercise on illegal power connections.
The local tribes have been providing PPL with information about the rampant use of illegal power connections in various households.
Their commitment to help PPL has resulted in a decrease in illegal connections in Mendi, PPL said.
The tribes are Kiburu, Wa’a, Wakwak and Tende. They met with PPL’s asset manager, Noah Ipmasua and agreed to offer their support.
According to the PPL team in Mendi, they have been doing awareness campaigns in close consultation with the tribes and locals about the importance of power supply, illegal connections and electricity safety.
Local councillors voiced concerns about the people’s safety as such illegal connections were dangerous.
