Tribes stop fighting after MP intervenes

A WESTERN Highlands MP is trying to broker peace between two warring tribes in his district.
Dei MP Westley Nukundj is one of the first MPs to negotiate with warring tribes to lay down their arms and stop fighting.
He commended the tribal leaders of Rologka and Kimka for taking his advice.
Nukundj, who is also the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, has sought the assistance of police mobile units and taskforce to provide security and live with the people so that they do not start tribal fight again.
“So far, the two warring tribes have decided to stop fight and I’m really impressed with the response from them so far,” he said.
“I commend and thank them for respecting me as their elected leader.
“I will take responsibility in the peace process.
“I will not be involving any peace mediators or anybody as everyone has his own political or hidden interest.
Nukundj said fight started over a suspected sorcery-related allegation and not the Gumanch Plantation as reported in the media.
He said if there was an issue they had on the plantation, there were better ways to resolve it rather than resort to violence.
“If one party starts attacking another, then I will hold the leaders responsible. Otherwise everyone is regretting what has happened and are looking forward to the peace process to start immediately,” he said.
Nukundj said he hoped to finalise the peace agreement by the end of next week for both tribes to sign to bring normalcy back in the area.
