Regimental Sgt Major Joseph Kamane has been farewelled by his comrades.
The lead soldier at the Engineer Battalion in Igam Barracks, outside Lae, is now an honorary sapper.
Kamane, who served for six years, is the longest serving RSM and the first to come through the infantry unit.
He was promoted to serve as the deputy force sergeant major at headquarters.
Various units from Igam held an official parade to farewell Kamane.
He was replaced by chief warrant officer class one Steven Jacob last Friday.
The event was followed by a dinner. Area Commander Lt – Col Mark Keru praised Kamane for being loyal and honest in demonstrating a keen leadership role to guide 250 soldiers at the barracks.
“As soldiers, our role and responsibility is to serve the authority which is the state of Papua New Guinea despite thick and thin. Without doubt, we serve no person but the order we swore as the oath diligently,” Keru said.
Kamane was awarded honorary sapper with engineer battalion’s insignia, a beret with sapper’s badge, including K3,000 worth of Dell laptop computer bought from Able computing.
“We all are custodians of the PNGDF Act and the code of military discipline as pillar to protect and uphold the military force,” Kamane said.
