Truth urged in K3bil loan inquiry

The truth must be told about the transactions regarding the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) K3 billion loan deal, says former Treasurer Don Polye.
He appeared before the inquiry yesterday.
He told The National afterwards that everyone involved must tell the truth.
“The truth is what we must all stand for.
“We cannot run away from it and we cannot pretend.
“We cannot deny it (nor) put it under the carpet.
“The truth will not discriminate against anybody.”
He said former prime minister Peter O’Neill and former finance minister James Marape “know about that”.
Poyle said some Cabinet ministers in the current and past governments “all know about this”.
“The truth is what I will be revealing to this commission as one of the witnesses,” he said.
“This country must be run on truth, founded on truth and the people of this nation must stand for the truth and live in the truth.”
Polye told the inquiry that he had lodged a complaint about the UBS loan to various authorities which resulted in the setting up of the commission of inquiry.
“I thought that the UBS loan was a very big mistake.
“The UBS loan has no bearing on the IPIC loan,” he said.
“I was the person who raised the issue when it was a controversial matter at that time.
“I was the treasurer. I believe in the rule of law, the best security and safety net for any nation is how people comply or obey the law.”
