PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chairman Sandis Tsaka has vowed to continue developing the sport in a bid to create employment and empower people across the country.
He made that statement following his re-election at the seventh PNGRFL annual general meeting in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Tsaka scored 36 votes while rival and Moresby South Rugby League president Brown Murema recorded four. Two votes were recorded as informal.
Electoral Commission returning officer Matthew Walaun conducted the election, which saw seven absentees out of the 49 eligible league associations.
“To get re-elected by the majority of eligible league associations shows the confidence in not only me but our hardworking team and what we have been doing,” Tsaka, re-elected for a third straight term, told the association presidents.
“While some may see it as a privilege, it is a huge responsibility — one we don’t take lightly.
“If there’s anything that the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League board and I can commit to you, we will continue to strive in building rugby league from where we are to another level for the benefit of everyone involved in the game.
“Rugby league is not an amateur sport or park football. It creates employment, and empowers people and communities.
“It can be career for a lot of people, whether it be players or officials.
“It can create spin-offs like business activities around rugby league.
“We are in charge of a multimillion-kina industry. The board that you have elected carries this responsibility.
“We will work in your interest and the interest of the game,” Tsaka told the league presidents and the public at the annual general meeting.
Meanwhile, four confederate directors were also voted and sworn in.
Gwaibo Mairi was re-elected as Southern Confederate director and as was Joe Tokam (Highlands).
Robin Iveke and Nicholas Lyons were elected as the Northern and New Guinea Islands confederate directors respectively.
Iveke, who defeated Pii Ipara five votes to one, replaces the (late) Russ Kaupa who passed away in Lae in March last year.
Lyons collected four votes, Avis Vanua three and Dennis Gati one, with a president absent. Lyons replaces the late Alois Tobata who passed away in Port Moresby in June last year.
