The Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea recently hosted a team of professional surfers from the United Kingdom to a promotional tour of the Tupira Surf Club, Madang.

The visit from Jan 24-31, was a follow-through on a tour SAPNG president Andrew Abel participated in, while partnering the Tourism Promotion Authority in the UK in May 2014. With Abel were UK short board male champion Allan Stokes, big wave Irish female surfer Dr Easky Britton, Celine Gehret and two others who won a surfing prize to PNG — James Paddok and Freddy Holland — and local photographer Rob Webber.

Tupira Surf Club patron Justice Nicholas Kirriwom was present during the week-long surf promotional event. Locals numbering more the 800 from the communities of Tavulte, Tupira, Simbeni, Rurunat and Suaru were on hand to receive a donation of 22 surfboards from SAPNG.

Abel and Kirriwom spoke about the work of the SAPNG and Tupira Surf Club in empowering the communities of Madang.
