THE Tusbab Stallions are excited about their first away match in the National Soccer League Northern Conference on Saturday, says team manager Juanita Kalip Tawi.
After losing 2-1 at home (Madang’s Laiwaden Oval) to Markham last time out, the Stallions will be aiming to get back into the winner’s circle in the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited-sponsored competition.
Tawi said the players had put the loss behind them and were looking forward to this week’s contest against Besta PNG United, a development side made up of skilful youngsters.
“We are excited to travel to Lae for our first away game,” Tawi said.
“We know it’s not going to be easy.
“We haven’t watched Besta play but we’ve heard about them and some of our players have played with them, so all we know is that it’s going to be a tough one.
“Since both teams are made up of young players, I am predicting a fast, flowing game with a lot of energy. We have one win and one loss at the moment so we would really love a victory this weekend. A win will boost the side’s confidence.
“I think last week’s game was tough and our attacking players didn’t do well.
“It was a poor execution and our coach Rachel Wadunah has worked with the players to polish up on that area this week.”
Tawi urged Madang fans in Lae to turn up at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium to show their support for the Stallions.
Besta also have a win (4-3 against Morobe Wawens) and a loss (1-0 to Lahi United).
The other match in Lae will see Morobe United face Markham.
Both sides are coming off a win last time out and will be aiming to continue the momentum.
Lahi and Laiwaden are on a bye due to their opponents — Toti City and the Wawens — gearing up for the Oceania Football Confederation Champions League.
Northern conference fixtures: Sat, Feb 9 – Markham v Morobe United (12.30pm), Besta PNG Utd v Tusbab Stallions (3pm).
