One hundred and sixteen technical and vocational education training (Tvet) teachers graduated yesterday with diplomas in vocational education after 14 weeks of training at the PNG Education Institute.
The graduates were trainers from selected Tvet institutions from the National Capital District, East Sepik, Eastern Highlands, Enga, East New Britain and Morobe.
They were sponsored under the European Union funded programme to improve teacher training for Tvet schools.
Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said the qualifications of tradesmen and women depended on a teacher.
“We have about 136 vocational training centres in the country, 39,000 students in these institutions, and 1300 teachers,” he said.
“So often, this group of teachers has been struggling to get promotion and other benefits that teachers from other levels of education get.
“This training has opened doors for them to be on par in terms of benefits and professional growth.”
This is a European Union funded programme in partnerships with the Education Department to improve the skills of men and women in the country and has committed to help some 270 vocational teachers to attain diploma in TVET qualification.
Head of Cooperation EU Delegation to PNG, Mateja Peternelj, said it had provided financial support in helping the Government of PNG in human development.
“Education is the main pillar of human development,” he said.
“TVET is seen as the vehicle to provide skills and make people able to access decent jobs it is considered around the world as the crucial element for the economic development.”
