TWELVE youths in Nawaeb District of Morobe got certificates and driver’s licence yesterday at the end of a six-week plant operator course at Commercial Training Centre in Lae.
The training was an initiative of Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge and was aimed at developing the district’s human resources.
Wenge said K50,000 would be sourced from the district service improvement programme to fund the initiative in the next four years.
The programme will help young women and men from the district to upskill themselves, especially the unfortunate ones.
“This batch consists of only male youths but the second and other training will include young women,” Wenge said.
“My main focus is on those youths who are unfortunate to achieve a higher level of education and are feeling rejected in the community.”
They have to be upskilled and become valuable in terms of becoming part of the little group that make up an effective human resource for better development in the district.
“With the boom in mining in the province and major projects in fishing and other sectors, these skilled people will be available for operator jobs in those impact developments,” Wenge.
Neill Ellery, the first secretary to the office of Lae MP John Rosso said the MP was very supportive of the initiative taken as there were a lot of benefits to it.
Ellery said the skill-based training was very important for development and emphasised that Nawaeb, Huon Gulf and Lae electorates are working closely to support human resource development.
Commercial Training College administrator and coordinator Timothy Feta said the students went through two weeks of theory and four weeks of practical lessons.
The practical part of the course was in partnership with the Division of Works when the students hands-on training in operating heavy equipment.
