TWO police officers have been charged with armed robbery, attempted murder, unlawful wounding and conspiring to commit other crimes in Port Moresby over the weekend.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou said the two were arrested by members of the Gordon Minor Crimes Unit.
N’Dranou said the two and another officer yet to be arrested had allegedly used an unmarked vehicle to rob, assault and injure four civilians on April 19. They allegedly held up a truck at 9-Mile.
They allegedly assaulted the driver and a female passenger and took their mobile phones. The vehicle was driven to Morata and Gerehu where they allegedly removed the betel nut in the vehicle.
Later, while under the influence of liquor, they allegedly shot and wounded a man at Gerehu. N’Dranou said he ordered that the officers be brought in for questioning but it was not done.
The Gordon Minor Crimes Unit was informed and tracked the movement of the officers. They finally apprehended them at a nightclub in Port Moresby on Saturday night.
N’Dranou said the action taken against the three showed the constabulary’s commitment in addressing police abuses and corruption which was a concern to the Government and the people.
