TWO people have reportedly died and a dozen others injured after the bus they were travelling in crashed into a semi-trailer outside Lae on Saturday.
The accident took place between 9-11am at Tanam, Markham, about 38 kilometres outside of the Morobe capital on the Highlands Highway.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said two women were killed on impact, while others escaped with cuts, bruises and other injuries.
One witness who did not want to be named said the 25-seater Coaster bus was travelling at speed at the time of the accident.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle,” the eyewitness said.
“It was raining heavily all morning and the road was slippery and he (driver) could have found it difficult to apply the brake,” the witness said.
He said the bus had been heading towards the highlands and the semi-trailer had been on its back to Lae.
“It was really scary, the side of the bus was smashed when the truck hit it,” the witness said.
Morobe provincial police commander Leo Lamei confirmed the accident but said he had yet to receive a detailed report of what happened.
