A POLICE car chase and shootout in Lae last Saturday resulted in two deaths.

Police said five youths held up a woman at the Boroko Motors car yard on Milfordhaven Road and drove off with a vehicle towards the Miles area and out of city limits.

The robbery was reported by a G4S security guard who was at the scene.

Police said they spotted the vehicle passing them at 4-Mile and they chased it, fired a warning shot in the process and the youths returned fire.

The exchange saw a tyre of the vehicle burst, the vehicle veered out of control and smashing into a power pole, spinning, stopping near the Evangelical Brotherhood Church premises.

The driver died and the gunman was shot.

The other three occupants of the car suffered bullet wounds after they jumped over the mission fence to escape.

Two of them received minor injuries and one suffered a major wound.

Police said most of the criminals were wanted by police and they had records for robberies and holdups.
