TWO people are dead and two badly injured as ethnic violence erupted in a suburb of Port Moresby last weekend, police have confirmed.
National Capital District Met Supt Perou N’dranou warned motorists to avoid using the road to Baruni where the killings took place.
“Motorists are advised to avoid using the Baruni Road for the time being until the situation is (fully) under control,” N’dranou said.
It began at around 3am Saturday when a man identified as Camilo Andrew, 23, from Central was shot and killed.
His relatives suspecting that he was killed by men from a province in the Highlands retaliated by killing mother-of-three Janet Otto from that province later that morning.
“Police are at the scene talking to both parties to de-escalate the situation,” N’dranou said.
He said there was another death yesterday morning at Duran Farm but police were yet to confirm whether it was related to the Baruni killings.
Otto, believed to be in her 40s, was on her way to do her marketing when she was assaulted and killed.
Her children were still sleeping in the family home at the time.
Her relatives denied killing Andrew and believed he could have been mistaken for a car thief.
A policeman at the scene called on people who had information to help police in the investigations.
Yesterday morning, two men were attacked in retaliation to Otto’s death.
One was shot on his thigh while the other was slashed with a knife on the arm. Motu Koita Assembly Baruni ward member Edward Collett appealed to both sides to respect the law.

  • PNG is always called a christian country, what a joke, but see whats happening around us, there is no respect and love for one another. PNG was not like this some 50 years ago simply because the time is running out and is controlled by satan the devil. ( 1John 5:19, 2Tim 3: 1-5, Rev 12:12 )

Vagrancy Act must be reviewed and implement it.

  • Both Ethnic Groups – the Goilalas and Engans are settlers on another man’s land. They ought to feel ashamed of themselves for their barbaric and criminal acts. Can the Baruni people (the original and rightful landowners – papagraun) take a class action against the Government and these illegal settlers for disturbing the peace and harmony , foreign intrusion and the alienation of their land.

  • Government start repatriating those people living in Moresby without working. Any one involved in such violence and killing remove to their home provinces.

  • I lived for a few years in the Bereina area and got to know and like the Goilala people I met. I do realise and it saddens me that differences have to be fought over until death in this day and age, and especially as PNG does pride itself on being Christian. Please please please dear friends read the teaching of Jesus about forgiveness and ask for the strength to live it. God bless PNG and especially all those people who are not in their own Province like those who congregate in Port Moresby and have no job or decent place to live.

  • Songo, bro I am a Highlander and I served 25 years in various province in the coastal provinces. There was no such problems during that time. Since many years in the city. there are some especially men from two provinces we all know are continuously causing havoc to PNGeans in NCDC. I am embarrassed and ashamed to talk to my colleagues from the coast.

I ask all Politicians to act now for a better tomorrow.

  • Don’t blame the highlands here. Highlands and coastals are all Papua New guineans we all live in the Nations Capital our city. The four regions of PNG make up Port Moresby city & it is not for the Motuans & Papuans alone. No one individual province is owning NCD, these city belongs to the people of PNG. We must have a fair respect for our city. Carjacking, stealing and killing must stop. We have to respect the international community living in our city. Giving them the conducive You. PNG is part of a international community and we must know that they are watching us. Please we must stop these stupid activities and let the rule of law prevail.
    PNG is for God!
