TWO passengers were killed and several others injured in a traffic accident at the Watabung section of the Highlands Highway on Tuesday night.
A new coaster bus was damaged beyond repair. It overturned while travelling downhill between Finoku Bridge and Watabung Station.
John Yorba, one of the people near the scene at the time of the accident, said they heard a big bang and when they rushed to the see what it was they saw the bus on its side.
“Two passengers died while others were injured,” Yorba said. “The Watabung health centre ambulance rushed the injured to THE Goroka provincial hospital and the deceased were taken to the morgue.”
Eastern Highlands police commander Suprintendent David Seine Jr confirmed the accident and warned PMV drivers to drive with care and pay attention on the road.
He said drivers should be mindful of the safety and comfort of their passengers.
“I will get police highway patrol units to set up roadblocks both day and night to check drivers and the vehicle condition to ensure safety is guaranteed,” he said.
