Two join refugee law training
TWO staff of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands (CBCPNGSI) have been taking part in the international refugee law (IRL) training on issues surrounding refugees. The Caritas PNG (CPNG) CBCPNGSI refugee resettlement officer Donatus Nahak and Jason Siwat took part in an IRL short course facilitated by the centre for migration and refuge studies of the American University in Cairo, Egypt, via zoom. Students from different parts of the world attended the one-week programme that targeted people working with refugees or those interested in refugee issues, introduced participants to the international legal framework and the broader institutional regime which governs the protection of refugees. “The two staff were sponsored by CPNG and CBCPNGSI as part of its capacity building programme,” the CBCPNGSI said in a statement. Course instructor Martin Jones offered insights into what the course encompassed. He thanked participants around the globe to attend the course despite the time zone differences, including Papua New Guinea, where class was from 6pm to 12am. Jones urged the participants to maintain contact and network for further engagement of necessary capacity building. Refugee resettlement officer Donatus Nahak said they were informed and guided through the training to advocate on the issues of displaced communities in PNG and the Solomon Islands.
