Two killed in road accident

TWO passengers were killed in a road accident when the bus they were travelling in burst its tyre and crashed on the Oro Bay Highway in last Friday.
The 15-seater PMV bus was then set ablaze by angry bystanders after the injured were sent to the Popondetta General Hospital.
Northern police commander Chief Insp Daniel Yangen told The National that police received phone calls of the accident and rushed to the scene and found only skeletal remains of the bus.
He said at about 5pm, bus driver Peter Oyambo picked up passengers at Popondetta town and the fatal accident occurred in Embi village in Ijivitari.
“Bystanders and passengers who survived the accident alleged that the bus was overloaded and the driver was soeedubg,” Chief Insp Yangen said. “While trying to negotiate a corner, the front left tyre bursted, the driver lost control of the bus and the vehicle rolled three times.”
He said about two weeks ago, a semi-trailer was involved in a collision with another vehicle while trying to avoid a drunkard on the road.
“There have been many accidents reported and most of these accidents were alcohol-related, either drunk drivers or pedestrians,” Chief Insp Yangen said.
“The provincial government needs to construct pedestrian footpaths.
“Bushes have narrowed many of the roads and sometimes vehicles give way to pedestrians.
“The provincial government should immediately look at clearing the bushes and constructing footpaths to minimise road accidents.”
Chief Insp Yangen, who took over as commander three months ago, said he would be directing the police traffic unit to conduct roadblocks and check vehicles for road worthiness and registration.
“Several warnings to PMVs to carry a limited number of passengers had fallen on deaf ears,” he said.
