HUNDREDS packed the Madang town cathedral last week to witness the ordination of two deacons.
Father Chris Halei and Fr Anton Gambu were ordained by the Archbishop of Madang in front of more than 500 people.
“To become a priest is not an easy task. These two men have studied for 11 years to become a servant of the lord and to serve His people in their spiritual needs,” Archbishop William Kurtz said.
“They now have a huge task ahead of them to be role models to many people,” he said.
Fr Halei will be serving the isolated Saidor Parish in the Rai Coast district while Fr Gambu will be serving his own people of Walium in Usino-Bundi parish.
The two priests said although they have a huge and difficult task ahead, they were pleased to have answered the call to serve the Lord.
They thanked their parents and their benefactors for their support in fulfilling the call.
Fr Halei’s father was elated that his son chose to follow in his footsteps and serve the church.
“It was indeed a proud moment for me and my family,” he said.
Both priests celebrated their first mass at their respective parishes.
