AN extra-marital affair sparked off a fight which ended in the deaths of two men working for a logging company in the Open Bay area of East New Britain on Monday.

Acting provincial police commander Snr Insp David Yapu said relatives of a woman found out that she was having an affair with a man identified as Nawoks Gabriel, 23, from Maprik, East Sepik.

The relatives discovered the two were contacting each other on their mobile phones. They assaulted and killed Gabriel at about 3am on Monday.

Yapu said Gabriel’s relatives after being told of his death went after one of the woman’s relatives, identified as Patrick Alois, from Point Takis village, Lassul Baining, and assaulted him.

He was later rushed to the health centre but died at 7am Monday.

Gabriel and Alois were employed by Open Bay Timbers.

Yapu said a police team was deployed to Open Bay on Monday and arrested five men implicated in the killings.

They were brought back to Kokopo with the bodies of the two men which are now at the morgue at Nonga awaiting post-mortem.

Yapu said police were monitoring the situation.
