POLICE in Lae, Morobe, have heightened surveillance at another settlement block at Kamkumung following the death of two men last Friday afternoon.
The deaths at Peter Block followed a dispute between young men from Wabag, Enga, and East Sepik.
Another fight last month at 15 Block at Kamkumung was between settlers from East Sepik and Chimbu which saw the destruction of property and homes.
Heavy police presence at Peter Block over the weekend prevented more trouble and possible deaths.
A settler from the area said the two men, one of mixed Morobe and Madang parentage, and the other from East Sepik, were hacked to death two houses apart last Friday afternoon.
Police moved in quickly to try to keep peace and promote possible mediation between the two disputing parties.
There is heightened tension in the area, with many settlers temporarily moving elsewhere in Lae.
The cause of the dispute is not known at this stage and police authorities in the city could not be contacted for comment.
The earlier fight last month followed the death of a woman from Chimbu, who had been married to a man from Wosera, in East Sepik.
