A GRADE 12 student who lost his father in grade two was one of the dux recipients at the Kilakila Secondary School recognition day last Thursday.
Damien Engime was one of two students who received the dux award.
Deputy principal for academic Hilares Aquino said there was a tie in placings between Engime and Chietera Loniu so the school decided to give them both the award.
“Social science students take five subjects, plus personal development, and both of them came first in three subjects and second in two subjects separately,” she said.
Engime lost both parents – his father, while he was in primary school and then his mother, two years ago while he was in grade 10.
He described his life as one that was filled with negativity but despite all that, it was his commitment and hard work that got him through.
“My mum and I moved to Port Moresby after we lost dad so I grew up with my two elder brothers,” Engime said.
He dedicated his award to his parents.
Meanwhile, Aquino said the school gave two dux awards annually, one for the social science stream and the other for the science stream, but this year was different.
The science dux was awarded to Kila Boga Kila.
Principal Herman Panai said the Covid-19 had affected the school.
He advised students not to give up on their dreams but to continue to work hard and commit to their education.
