PAPUA New Guinea Under-20 women’s coach Lisa Cole is pleased with the progress her side has made on their first overseas tour.
The team’s tour of South Korea enabled them to gain valuable experience as they build-up to November’s Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup in Port Moresby.
The Yvonne Gabong-captained national side returned on Monday via Hong Kong and overnighted in Port Moresby, before flying back to their base at the National Sports Institute in Goroka, Eastern Highlands.
Cole said the trip overall was a learning experience, despite the side losing all their matches on the tour. She said PNG played well and had shown improvement from their Tri-Nations series last month.
“Our speed of play was good and we had some good moments in attack.
“We just got caught at times, making individual mistakes that cost us goals against the top teams,” Cole said.
The American said she was happy with the trip and the opportunity it had given her to run her entire squad.
“I played everyone and was able to see what they capable of and how they responded to pressure.
“We had some disappointing performances and then some really good performances. Our fitness isn’t on par with the top teams yet and that will be something we continue to work on,” Cole said.
Cole thanked the PNGFA and the Korean FA for providing the team with the opportunity.
