EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro has made an appeal to Papua New Guineans to take care of education institutions and infrastructures.
Uguro told The National that he was not pleased to receive news of another school building being lost to fire.
A frustrated minister said regardless of what the circumstances were the public needed to respect state and local property that provided a vital service to the community.
He said this following the recent burning down of a male dormitory of Porgera Secondary School in Enga.
“More awareness needs to be carried out to educate the rural population on how to take good care of these institutions,” he said.
Uguro said it took time and resources to build these infrastructure such as classrooms and dormitories and burning them only affected the children and youth of the area who were innocent.
He called for people to be responsible and look after state facilities that their benefited from.
He said students and teachers were the ones to suffer when a school building was lost to fire.
He urged police in the provinces that had experienced burning of school property to investigate these incidents and arrest and charge those responsible.
The National understands that the incident at Progera now brings the total of alleged school arsons to three in the space of five months so far in the 2022 academic year.
In February, there were alleged school arson incidents in East New Britain and Jiwaka.
