FREDRICK Joseph, 22, says he uses his free time at university to be a youth advocate.
His efforts had not gone unnoticed as he was recognised by the UN Women for going out to communities, settlements and schools to talk about making society safe for women.
When joining the advocacy group Sanap Waintaim in 2016, the final-year journalism student at the University of PNG said he wanted to make Port Moresby a safe city.
Joseph was recognised along with 29 others during International Women’s Day celebrations in Port Moresby last week.
“It is really an honour to be recognised although as an advocate I do not do it for the recognition,” he said.
“When I became part of the campaign, I saw the campaign as something that I was really passionate about because the campaign was something about creating safe public spaces for women and girls.
“There is a huge organisation set up as part of the campaign, there is The Voice Inc, Equal Playing Field, YWCA, Mission Vibe, The Adolescent Health Club and Yoga and Walk for Life.”
“The Sanap Wantaim is basically made up of youths from different organisations.”
Joseph said ensuring a safe community is everyone’s business.
He said he was prepared for another year of advocacy and wanted youths in Port Moresby to stay out of trouble by knowing and identifying their passion in life.
