UN Women plans campaign on harassment

UN Women will carry out a week-long campaign in Port Moresby to address one of the problems facing women – harassment in public areas, says Safe City Programme officer Brenda Andrias.
“The campaign is not just for street harassments but violence against women and girls in general. In this case, we are talking about violence against women and girls in public areas.”
Youths from the Sanap Wantaim programme supported by the National Capital District Commission will relay the message to people that harassment in public should not be taken as a joke.
Behavior Change Campaign coordinator Jeanette Ila said harassment included “unwanted comments, whistling and stalking”.
People have the right to say no as it is depriving a woman’s right to freely move in public areas such as markets and bus stops.
The campaign will teach people to respect one another.
The target area is Tabari Place in Boroko because it is the most unsafe area for women.
