A RECENT announcement of Southern Zone rugby league trials to be held in Central has come under fire.

The Chairman of Port Moresby Rugby League Samson Unagi questioned why PNG Rugby League Southern Region Director Gwaibo Mairi failed to inform Southern zone PNGRFL affiliates of the dates and programme of the trials he announced recently.

Unagi also queried the reason for having the trials  at Kwikila station oval in the Rigo district.

“If Mairi does not know, let me inform him that NCD and POMRFL is in the Southern region. I have many aspiring players from my league, as well as the suburban league with players from all over the country including the Southern region,” Unagi said.

“The Lloyd Robson oval in PRL stand as the best venue for rugby league, let along host trials for the Southern. We also have the two supporting fields if needed.

“What does the director hope to achieve taking the trials into the district oval at Kwikila? I have seen the field condition and it is not up to standard. The players’ safety must be given priority when making such decisions.”
